iNavX: Marine Navigation App Reviews

Disappointed!!!

I was looking for coverage of the Trent System and thought at this price it would be there. If I could get my money back I would. Unhappy Sailor!

Great App

I use this app on my boat with an Otterbox and a RAM Mount and it is as good as my humminbird chart plotter. As a tournament fisherman I like the advantage of being able to use this app for researching prefish spots and on the boat. Well worth the money guys!

Ok but interface needs work

The app works ok. The interface is built more from the perspective of marine gps units rather than a full blown iPad device. The CHS charts should knit together so that you can continuously scroll over all your charts. There should be 1 finger zoom in and out buttons because on the boat you often have something in your hand like a fishing rod or you want to zoom in/out while navigating. Having to use two fingers to pinch zoom in/out is annoying. The edit of a waypoint uses this tiny popup window. You have an iPad screen. Use it. The editing does not even auto capitalize sentences. This is a standard iPad interface feature expected by users. Fix these things and think more in terms of iPad and it deserves another star.

Great app! Dont believe the negative reviews

I just got this app, and let me tell you that I go from a Garmin 78 handheld marine GPS that I bought for 300$ dollars…then had to buy a blue chart G2 map for 150$…This beats it hands down. The usual iPhone interface is great. No more using arrows and wait for the image to refresh…no more confusing menus…no more tiny screen! Yep, my iPhone has a much better and bigger screen than the expensive Garmin 78…but my iPhone doesnt float…Ill take my chances. If you want a touch screen GPS…Garmin starts at 700$ or so…If you already have an iPad, youll have a much bigger, sharper and easier to use screen. The guys putting this app down must be working at the big G cause for the price, you cant really beat it. Oh..and as far as the "expensive" Canadian maps go, I bought the entire country Navionics C6 Hotmaps for 25$ (10$ membership and 14.99$ for the map) thru X-Traverse.

Get this app

Wow, great value. I was able to transfer all my waypoints from Magellan mapsend to my device and they overlaid perfectly. I purchased a waterproof case from Lifeproof. I now have a handheld chart plotter for my boat and its a phone too! I cant get over how user friendly the app is and every time I use it I find something new and exciting to try. I cant wait for the updates! To all the people commenting on how expensive the maps are, are you nuts? I got all the 2xg Canada maps from x-traverse for $25.00 ($10.00 yearly maintenance fee, plus $14.99 for the maps) and tax is extra, thats it! The map detail is better than the digital paper charts you get from CHS for $169.00. So app plus maps plus tax (Canada) is $86.27. You cant get a touch screen chart plotter for under $500 as reported below and the cumbersome functionality of a handheld gps makes this app more attractive all the time. I would think that this app would out class any hand held gps device. Go ahead prove me wrong!

Overpriced crap

Way too expensive and you have to continue to pay. Lost my charts and went to re download only to find I had to pay again just to get the charts I had already bought. Must continue to pay an expensive subscription fee annually. You dont get to keep the charts you buy as backup on your computer...total rip off. DONT BUY THIS APP

I nav

Bought this app and charts for Ontario waters are non existent unless you pay an additional 49.00 us in addition to a 10.00 subscription to another service. Even willing to pay the extra money did not give me easy access. Wish I could get my money back

Superb App...

I have read with interest some of the comments about having to download the costly Canadian Charts. That isnt a problem with X-Traverse or INavx but with the Canadian Government charging for this service. Note that the NOAA Charts for the US are free, by comparison. You can always download the Navionics charts for Canadian regions instead that are cheaper. This is an unbelievable app. I have the Navionics and CHS charts for the waters inside Vancouver Island and with these charts, INavX is superb. It outperformed the chart plotter on the boat we chartered by a country mile and it had all of the capability of that we needed. Apparently it can be used with Auto pilot systems through NMEA but I cannot comment on that. Jim

$50 large screen chart plotter in your cockpit

This app is unbelievably great! Canadian Hydrographic Service electronic charts are not free and iNavX cant, wont and shouldnt be asked to eat that cost for you. They are up-front about the price of Canadian waters charts. If you dont want to pay for your region then take it up with CHS but iNavX does not deserve a poor rating because a government agency has a policy you dont like. In a recent three-day race around Lake Ontario. I was able to view 8 km spacing GRIB (wind prediction) data atop my real-time position and track (on iPad). Having it on the large touch-screen makes it immersive. On another boat, I have wired up the instrument package to broadcast over WiFi (using a product recommended in iNavXs documentation). Real-time wind and boat speed and direction and depth can all be shown on-screen along with clear instructions for steering to a waypoint. If there is a danger, it is that youll find yourself relying on it so much youll forget to look in front of you! I think most of the negative reviews were because it doesnt make coffee.

Awesome!

Last summer this app helped me find my way all through the Gulf Islands in British Columbia. I timed the tides on the passages perfectly - within moments - no waiting around for me! Looking forward to exploring Desolation Sound this summer confidently with iNavx!

Bi-polar app

Kind of a frustrating app - the underlying bones are simply fantastic, but the iOS implementation is amateur at best - to the point where I dont know how it made through App Store screening. If you ignore the fact that your holding an iOS device and pretend you have a portable chart plotter, its a 6/5.

INax

Great app for the iPad. Provides a backup to the boats GPS and seems very accurate. Support has also been good. Works well with Fugawi ENC app for moving routes from PC to iPad.

Better out there

This app has a slow and cumbersome interface. Difficult to use and very unresponsive to gestures. I have found it frustrating to use. Subsequently, I now use a competitors product.

Fantastic product, replace your chart plotter with this

Ive been using iNavx with my ipad as my primary navigation package for 2 years. Its a terrific product, highly reliable and beats my chart plotter hands down. This package is quite a bit better than the Navionics software since it connects to the boats instruments via wifi and also provides an AIS display too. Note though that I use Navionics charts with this software. Connected into the vessel GPS and instruments via a wifi /AIS bridge from Vesper marine we get accurate chart location, and instant AIS readings on approaching boats. Only 4 stars because the ergonomics of some of the displays could be improved - some of the buttons are a bit too small and it would be nice to be able to move the numerical displays around the screen. Sometimes I think the people who designed this are young with perfect vision, and have never tried to use their software at night in 5 swells on a racing sailboat. Great package, worth the money!

Not Cheap for Canadians

So downloaded my new app, started downloaded charts and everything was going so great until........ I tried to view charts for my Canadian Waters then came the bad part. You have to spend another $179.00 USD for charts for my areas in Canada, of course the two spots I want to travel I needed to download two areas. So that is going to cost me $358.00 USD. Canadians do your research better then I did. The app for US waters looks great, but the wrong area for me.

Good app but bad Canadian charts

I found the app about as easy to use as a typical dunderheaded chart plotter - easier than Raymarine but not as clear as a garmin. The app allows you to track your position, plot routes, and generally look around a large chart collection reasonably easily. However the expensive chart addons have only large-scale maps of the Canadian side of the Great Lakes. If you buy, you can look forward to one map for each of Huron, Erie, and Ontario.

Canadians Beware!

Add $200 for Van Isle east side. And another $200 for VI west side. North to Rupert another sackful. Coulda bought a bigger boat!!

$50 for the app and at least $50 per map Eeks

I didnt bother even using this thing. I wasted money buying it then have to spend crazy amounts per map... I bought another app with all Canadian maps included for $20 and will delete this waste of money.

Already own the Canadian raster charts but cant use

I have previously purchased Canadian raster charts for use on the companion Mac program GPS Nav X. Why must I purchase them again (theyre expensive). I should be able to hook this up to iTunes and simply drake the charts into the App for use on the iPad, as it has replaced my Mac as my main chart plotter. This is stupid.

Doesnt do what they say, waste of $60.00

All I got, read the title, very user "unfriendly" and waste of my $ menu icons unreadable for Ontario lakes, no updates and reason no reviews. I give it a negative 10, to much to list hope others have better success.
